Waikato business community rallies to protect their own from COVID-19 fallout

The Waikato business community is rallying together to help deliver business continuity resources to those affected by the COVID-19 virus.

The collaboration comes following last week’s announcement by the Government of a $4 million regional support package aimed predominantly at New Zealand domestic SME businesses.

The region’s economic development agency, Te Waka, will lead delivery of this economic support to Waikato businesses affected by COVID-19 on behalf of New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE). And it is calling on the expertise of Waikato business organisations to help.

Te Waka chief executive Michael Bassett-Foss says it is a case of all hands-on deck.

“Our team is working collaboratively with more than 20 local business groups, Government agencies and community organisations to provide Waikato businesses with advice, mentoring and practical support.

“The Government’s funding will be used to bring on two additional staff in the Waikato to deliver COVID-19 engagements and on-line response workshops in partnership with other government agencies.

“We have already begun assessing the needs of our local businesses to determine what support is needed and where. Once we have that information collated, we will work in partnership with local business experts to provide the training and resources Waikato businesses need.

“The workshop sessions will focus on providing advice and information on topics such as employee wellbeing, cashflow management and business continuity – all essential to help keep businesses afloat while they weather this economic storm.”

On top of a business continuity package, the Government has also announced a $5.1 million targeted wage subsidy scheme for workers in the most adversely affected sectors.

The wage subsidy is part of the Government’s larger $12.1 billion package to help cushion the impact of COVID-19 in the fight to support Kiwis’ jobs and the domestic economy from the virus.    

“The Government has reassured us that New Zealand is in a strong position to respond to the economic impacts of COVID-19. Today’s latest funding announcement demonstrates that and amidst so much uncertainty, will help give Waikato businesses confidence in their ability to build resilience and ensure business continuity.”
